I was going through the site's stats (as I often do; I'm a compulsive stat-checker) when I noticed a surprising and awesome thing about the visitors to peachycomics:
What does it mean? It means that peachycomics readers are waaay smarter than average internet users, as demonstrated both by the high percentage of chrome users and abysmal number of IE users. Good job, guys!
Why the bias against IE? Just don't like getting viruses, that's all. Oh, and if you're curious about the timeframe for those stats, it covers one month going backwards from today.
And just because I'm here (I'm so often not here that I'm starting to forget just exactly what 'being here' entails) I thought I'd riff a little about the history of peachycomics.
I can't remember if it was ever actually supposed to be about comics, but it certainly isn't now.
In fact, it's not really about much of anything. Since it began back in June of '03, it's mainly been a place for me to smugly walk up to the microphone, drop a few pithy lines, and then retreat backstage for a few months to hyperventilate.
It's been a way to rant and rave about girls I was into, a place to geek out about Japan, a means for my family to keep up with me when I was overseas, but now it's kind of devolved into yet another accurate representation of its webmaster: a reflection of my recent stagnation and general laziness. But I'm wondering if it isn't high time for a redesign.
What will this so-called redesign bring? Who knows. But it feels like we're about due for one, doesn't it? I'd say the first layout was an MS Paint-level of skill, while this version is more of a Photoshop-vibe. The next step should have actual 3D graphics, and if I could find a way to maintain some semblance of this layout but keep the text centered, that would be awesome (that's always been the elusive dream).
9.21.2011/02:14 uncharted waters And, for the hell of it, I wrote a short walkthrough for a ten year old game called Daikoukai Jidai Gaiden (Uncharted Waters: New Horizons 2) that nobody really cares about but me, but if you like looking at pretty pictures, check it out.
Basically, the game is a kind of not-quite sequel. More like an expansion pack with slightly better graphics.
7.18.2011/10:17 it's a hard-knock undeath And...I'm back. it's been what, three months? Things have been happening. I moved back to Pittsburgh, and I've been spending most of my summer in the lab, brewing up new stuffs for you to enjoy or disenjoy or whatever it is you do with them. Item one:
Yep. Made a new music video for Nicotine Fist. Matt thinks he looks too skinny, but as I told him, my computer simply doesn't have strong enough hardware to render him in his full glory. Another thing I did was to write a new book and toss it onto smashwords. Third book of the Vicious Magick series. Costs like 3 bucks, though.
And I'm working on the next one as we speak. What else have I been working on? Hmm...well, I've been trying my hand at designing t-shirts. I came up with a few ideas, which I had printed up at my local sports shop conveniently located just down the street. Very limited-edition stuff, only one copy of each exists.
Each one has its own specific meaning which I won't bore you with here. The other thing I've been doing is drinking soda. You may remember a few years ago when I posted some pics of my favorite Skeleteens sodas. I ordered more, and it looks like this:
So...yeah. Oh, and also I made bookshelves shaped like Tetris blocks, a project which required the buying of tools and paint and using said tools and paint to aid in the creation of the aforementioned block-shaped bookshelves. They look like this:
I think that pretty much catches us up. And now, back to your regularly-scheduled internetting.
4.6.2011/10:31 Hard-core cartography Yes. Oh, snap. No I didn't--yes I did! I updated peachycomics. You must be as confused as I am. But...why? It's a good question. It's been, what, six months? Indeed. That's the past, and the past is behind us. Now and forever. Here's a 3D map I made:
Right? Yes, I am also happy with it. It's a map of Upper Kleighton, the fictional world of Vicious Magick. I suppose I should also tell you what I've been up to for the past six months, what with the moving to Chicago, and my soon-to-be return to Pittsburgh, but that's another story for another day, I suppose.
10.20.2010/10:50 3D NES Zelda and Nicotine Fist Oh, did you miss me? [insert spiel about sporadic posts] etc. I went to North Carolina, worked on some big projects, learned some new songs, and also made two animated videos. The first is a 3D reimagining of the classic NES game Zelda:
The second is a music video for a song I wrote a while back called Superheroine. Me and Nicotine Fist, that is to say, Crazy Matt and I laid down some drums and guitar tracks, respectively, and I spent a bunch of time animating this:
7.18.2010/01:52 depravitysedge dot com Has it really been over 2 months since I've done a peachycomics post? I don't believe it. Must be an typo, a mistake, an error, a grave injustice on the part of the cosmos. Or some clever trick.
No.
What it is is Depravity's Edge Dot Com. Depravitysedge.com. The website. For the comic. Which I've been diligently making these past few months. Or something like that. To find out for yourself, click here. Or click on the giant graphic below. Either way. Your call. It's up to you. However you wanna do it. Or don't do it. Whatever. You think I care? I don't care. Not a bit. Don't care. 5.5.2010/17:55 depravity's edge...yet again And no, that date and time was not contrived. Just a happy coincidence, believe it or not. So, the time has come to show you what I've been working on. With all this blender-based excitement, I thought I'd pop out a few dep edge strips to see what they'd look like, and here they are (click the picture to see all 5 strips in their 3D glory). 4.15.10/20:34 progress... Quick update--progress!! This promises to be a fun night...
4.15.10/19:44 rendering dimitri And that beautiful list of channels is useless, as they changed half of the channel numbers the day after I put up that list. Oh well. You may be wondering how business is, and I've gotta tell ya, it's not phenomenal, but I'm still eating and paying rent and getting the occasional large job.
As you may have noticed, I'm dabbling in 3D modeling. I'm using blender, and I like it a lot. I'm a complete novice at this, so my first attempt was pretty shoddy, but I think it's decent for my first effort. My plan is to make some models of the characters of Depravity's Edge so I can make comics again without having to do all that bothersome drawing.
That's all for now. 3.14.10/23:43 happy pi day Hello, internetters. As always, it's been a long time since my last missive to you. This is partly because I've had nothing interesting to say, and partly because trying to start a business out of your home takes a lot of time and effort.
[pittsburgh digital cable channels]
And I do not come empty-handed. Clicking the link above will take you to a list of Pittsburgh digital cable channels. Some of you have fancy cable boxes and don't need it, but if you're like me, you bought a new TV and your 10-channels-of-basic-cable turned into something else. Rather than risk losing these precious channels, I documented them.
If I get a little more motivation, I'll post some winter pictures and put up some new videos, that is, if my adventures tomorrow don't exhaust me completely.
1.25.10/21:43 spinning the wheels It's been an interesting week. I quit my full-time job to devote a few months to trying to make it as a freelance Japanese-to-English translator. Is it risky? Hell yeah. Am I confident I will succeed? Hell no.
But I've gotta give it a shot.
You might say it has something to do with turning 26 over the weekend and some sort of entering-my-mid-20's crisis. You may be right about that.
So...what does the future hold? Well, I've got to shore up my client list and start being online...more? How can I be online more than all the time? Damn you, skype. Stupid internets.
From a practical standpoint, all it really means is sending a bunch of e-mail this week and playing Zelda. Which I'm totally down with, if I can only find that second elusive dayfly for the creepy bug girl. Only one mirror shard between me and freedom.
1.10.10/00:50 numbers As I sit here drinking my second Shochu Throwback of the evening (2 shots high-grade shochuu and Mountain Dew throwback, splash of orange juice for color, and some champagne because it was in the fridge) I reflect on the new year and the progress we've made, and it occurs to me that I never really divulge how well things are going in terms of hits and visits.
Well, no more. I will reveal to you some numbers which will illuminate things for you. Here we go...
Views for Top 5 Stories on The Spoof! (all-time)
Peachycomics.com over the last 30 days
Barnes and Noble Best/Worst Ranked Free e-books
YouTube Stats (all-time)
Now that you know all of that sensitive, personal information, you might be wondering whether those numbers are good or bad, or coming to your own conclusion. How do I feel about it?
Meh. Don't much care.
It's not like I'm going to quit writing stories or doing the site or posting ridiculous videos, so it doesn't do me any good to dwell on it.
Time to go back to shochu and Twilight Princess. Cheers, internetters. Be safe out there.
1.1.10/20:38 the dawning of the age of aquarius And here you were thinking I was dead. But this is not the case, as evidenced by this post. If you've been on Mars for the last three months and missed my complete lack of posts, you can see them here or head on over to the archives to get debriefed.
So what's been doing during my hiatus? Good question. The answer is big stuff. Big things in the form of new tech, new ideas, and new hope.
Well, maybe not that last one.
The hold up, as it were, was the transition between my old computer, Edgar, and my new computer, Marvin. Me and Marvin have been tear-assing around this thing called the internet taking no prisoners and painting the intertubes red.
Now that I've got a new program which will let me update the ol' peachycomics (my means of installing the last program I was using have mysteriously disappeared...) and a computer fast enough to handle the massive, raw power that is 6,000 files simultaneously booting at once, we're ready. We're pumped.
And thanks to this beautiful little present Dad gave me for Christmas, I've been making new videos as well. Care for a sample? Here you go.
You think that's all? No way is that all. There's some more. With my works now corrupting the minds and hearts of e-book havers everywhere, you can find me on Barnes and Noble as well. My best-performing title there, 57 Ivans, is currently holding strong somewhere around 63,000th place (out of 64,000!). Yeah, we're really rocking now.
And what else can we expect in the year ahead? Well, maybe some pics of the computer and the TV I bought during a recent bout of hypomania, for starters. I'd put them up right now, but I'm waiting for the camera battery to charge.
EDIT: I included the aforementioned pictures.
