4.29.05/01:06 kuraido no ugokenai shiro

4.29.05/01:06  nissa's comic debut

As you can tell, there's a new comic.  I know some of you are crybabies and like everything to be in English ("this is America! speak English, dammit!  even if I'm on vacation in Europe I expect everybody to speak English!"), so if you click on the comic above or the link below you can read it in a decipherable language.

[daikon warrior #16] clyde's non-moving castle

4.28.05/22:56  doors that open, doors that close

Perhaps tomorrow will be the day, but who can tell?  I've been waiting for it for five months, so at this point it's going to take something spectacular to keep me from being disappointed again.

And as the picture on the left demonstrates, I've been experimenting with my selective black and white techniquing.

There's a commercial for Puffy Amiyumi.  She's coming to America.  I had the opportunity to go to one of her shows (wait, are there two of them? I don't even know...) when she came to Kansai in the fall, but I chose not to go.  Just because she's Japanese doesn't mean she doesn't suck.  Right?

4.27.05/21:53  jesse's girl

Obviously, she's got some problems.  Her eyes aren't pointed properly, her hair hasn't been filled in, and she's only half drawn and 25% shaded.  Not to mention that this picture violates 3 important central tenets of my drawing philosophy:

1. She's partially in color.

2. The rebel flag design.

3. She's got clothes on.

But since it's his birthday next week and he's moving to Florida, I will make ONE exception and do this picture for him.  'Cause I'm such a nice guy or something.

Also, his sister was driving through my neighborhood yesterday for some strange reason.  I was in my bathrobe and many-holed pajamas trying to get the damn mower started and she parked in the driveway and talked to me for a minute.  So young.  So cute.  So wrong.  Good thing I was in no state to impress.

You were probably expecting some really cool post today, since it's been such a long time.  Maybe like a new comic and stuff.  But that's just not on my agenda today.  The tickets are 1700 instead of 1200, so I'm a little bummed and not feeling very comic-y.  But I dekita'd my last class today, so it's summer!! and I might start making more comics!!

Just not today.

Also, it's strange for me to think of this as my summer when it snowed the day before yesterday.  Doesn't it have to be spring first before it can be summer?  I guess this is no longer a prerequisite.  Just another sign of the coming apocalypse.  Get your ticket now before they sell out!

4.24.05/08:44  the darkMeister revealed! [part 2]

4.24.05/08:44  three down, two to go

Two classes, that is.  Pretty soon it will be summertime, not that you'd be able to tell that by looking outside.  Snow in April!  What a crock of crap.  The comic is too big for the main page (7 panels!), so you can either click on the graphic above or the link below if you want to read it. It's all filled with 'special effects,' like it's the future or something.

[daikon warrior #15, pt 2] darkMeister revealed!

You know what else is crappy? Going to Makudo at 11pm and trying to get a cheeseburger only to be told "You can't get it because it's not on our 'Late Night' menu.  You can get a quarter pounder for $2.50, though." Great.  I saboru work to walk down there in the snow and that's what I get.  And I only had a buck and a quarter anyway, so I couldn't get anything.  Sons of a bitches.

4.22.05/21:34  the darkMeister! [part 1]

4.21.05/21:11  mumei na yume

yume ni deta

yume ni dete hoshi

mou ikkai

That's a genuine haiku, following the strict 5-7-5 setup and with the first line defining a point in time, sort of.   Perhaps you'd like it yaku-shite'd into english?  Okay, let me give that a whirl...

anonymous dream

saw you in my dream

wish i could see you again

do it one more time

No, not as good.  You lose the rhyming title and sacrifice rhythm by being forced to use pronouns.  Also, the last line is a cliché in english. Terrible.  But there will be a new comic tomorrow evening when I wake up.  Yeah!

Also, for those of you who can read kanji, here's a tongue twister that came about as I was trying to do my homework the other day...

Is the 宿題 題 the same 題 as the 問題 題?

As you can see, it is.

4.20.05/01:45  making radish soup

The twentieth already?  That can't be right...where did those two days go?  Did I sleep?  Have I been sleeping that long?  I don't remember.  But there are two exciting things I do know: I finished the character design of the darkMeister (!) and there's a new comic.

[daikon warrior #14] making radish soup

It doesn't feature the darkMeister.  That comic will be coming soon, though, and it will be fan-tastic.  That's it for today!

4.16.05/03:47  giveth and taketh

So for those of you who got to play it, great!  For the rest of you, that is, of course, too bad.  Due to its questionable legal status I decided to remove the demo game.  That's the bad news.  The good news is that while the demo is gone, there will still be a full-length game, with better graphics and no chance of getting me sued.

If you're feeling sore about it, drop me an e-mail and we might be able to work something out.

Also, today marked the first day of my rigorous DDR training, where I try to play DDR wearing 20 pounds of training weights.  Quarter steps were, surprisingly, easier.  Eighth steps, not so much.  I'd have to say that songs with lots of eighth steps became pretty much impossible.

Ah, but therein lies the challenge.

Two more weeks, kids.  Two more weeks and this will all be behind us.  Two more weeks and this will all seem like the bad dream that it was.  Two more weeks and we can all go out for margaritas and dance naked in my backyard.  Er, I'd like to have that last statement stricken from the record if I could, your honor.

4.15.05/21:22  daikon warrior #13

4.14.05/16:22  some japan pictures from mark

Dedo-san sent me these awesome pictures yesterday, one from Kyomizudera, another from Ashiya (I think that's what he said...) and I believe the other two are from Kyoto...

April is a great time to be in Kyoto because, as you can see, there are a ridiculous amount of sakura in bloom and it's freaking gorgous.  I wanted to link Mark's site, but he seems to have taken it down.

4.12.05/00:18  quoth the raven

I found this great picture of some random ninja with a sweet-ass ninja bandana who is apparently dealing death to one of those boots that parking police of colleges and cities love to give out.  I don't know who he is, but I'm pleased that he apparently won his battle against the man.  Also, aren't those some freaking sweet eyebrows of ferocity?

Starting last Thursday, these contractors have been showing up promptly at 7am every day to hammer the shit out of my walls and make sure I don't get those vital last two hours of sleep.  I think just the knowledge that they're coming has done something to me psychologically that won't let me  fall asleep til 6am.

I mean it, I haven't gotten more than 5 good hours of sleep since last Tuesday and...she told me to quit complaining.  Sorry.  I get a little off track and start to get things mixed up.  Back to relevant news.  I've been tinkering with these game-maker programs and they're pretty fun.  The hardest part will be making all the animations and whatnot, but even that is not beyond my super-abilities.  New comic tomorrow?

4.10.05/23:16  daikon warrior #12

4.10.05/22:54  dungeons and dagrons

So today I had a brilliant idea for what I want my next project to be.  I've been spending lots of time drawing Daikon Warrior comics and thinking how cool it would be to have a fully-playable RPG based on it, so that is the new vision: Daikon Warrior: The Game.  I downloaded a few RPG editors today and I was playing around with them to see what the battles are like.  Mainly all I want from one is to be able to make my own sprites, since obviously the characters have to look a very definite way.

Probably if I do that it will be a summer project for while I'm hiding from the powerful rays of the sun that do so much damage to geeks like me.  If you have any input/ideas, or programming abilities you'd like to lend to the project I would be more than happy to have the help.

These are some screen shots from the original EarthBound for NES, which was never released in the US for some odd reason...

4.9.05/21:12  daikon warrior #10 [part 1]

4.9.05/21:00  ognar, ogre-at-law [part 1]

But that's not all, if you click the comic above or the link below this paragraph, you can see 'Ognar, Ogre-at-Law [part II!],' the thrilling conclusion to the first part.  I based this character on my friend Eric.  I'm not saying he looks like an ogre, but his courtroom presence will be intimidating enough that others will perceive him as something giant and fierce.

[daikon warrior #11, pt2] ognar, ogre-at-law, part II

And I know for a fact that some of you have been wondering where the dark short stories are.  You wonder why I haven't written one in such a long, long time, maybe even seven months.  But fear not, yesterday I found a few minutes to write one.  You might even like it.

[seraphim] short story about nothing at all

I guess that's about it.  I have five or six more storyboards written, so those comics should be appearing over the next few days.  I think I want a peanut butter sandwich or something.  And I still have to do my stupid taxes before Friday, when they're due, apparently.

4.8.05/01:58  [insert catchy title here]

[Insert first paragraph containing overly personal anecdotes nobody cares about.  Make second sentence end with stomach-churning graphic description of something bodily.  End first paragraph with a dash of mildly self-deprecating sarcasm.]

[hyperlink] here's a link to some media

[Insert second paragraph that gives a description of the hyperlink to the media in the line directly above this paragraph.  Second sentence of this paragraph continues to pimp out link.  Third and fourth sentences (and fifth, if necessary) continue out said pimping.]

[Write third paragraph using first dumb thing that pops into head.  Maybe something that somehow relates to some pop culture thing everybody knows about, like a movies or a television reference.  Finish with comment bragging about how awesome self is.]

4.7.05/00:01  basking in glory

So the presentation is DONE.  That leaves me with only 5 or 6 major headaches before I'm 3-years-done with college.  I wore my super-cool Astro Boy tie today and it gave me the confidence to survive 7 minutes in front of the class, feigning proficiency.  Dekiru furi o shite-ita. Itsu mo, man, itsu mo.

[daikon warrior #9] repetitive tendencies

Does that mean there's another Daikon Warrior for all to enjoy?  It does.  I'm afraid it won't be funny to you unless you have ever played any RPG ever made.  Once you read it you'll know what I mean.  Also check out the special guest star.  I won't ruin the surprise by telling you who it is.

4.6.05/00:35  daikon warrior #8

4.6.05/00:23  blood-soaked nightmares

Why is it that I have nightmares every night?  Is it because I sleep on the basement floor in the dark with dozens of spiders?  Perhaps it's all the psychotropic drugs that the doctors here give me every day to keep me from going on another knifing spree...

I know the comic above is wildly offensive to some of you, but follow my logic before you get upset.  The cop is a character from Earthbound, and you FIGHT him and DEFEAT him.  So why is it okay to slaughter cops in a video game and not in a comic spree?  And anyway, he's a crooked cop.

There was something wildly interesting I wanted to tell you on here, something that would radically change our relationship in dynamic and exciting ways, but I forgot it.  I think if you stick around long enough I will remember it, so just wait for a second.

4.5.05/00:17  daikon warrior #7

4.4.05/11:59  disappointments and redemptions

Today was a mixed bag of emotion for me.  My plans to earn money by filling cups with love were dashed cruelly by that plump-but-alluring receptionist who told me my swimmers didn't survive the freezing well enough to qualify me for the program.  I guess it makes sense.  I don't even like going outside when it's cold, so why should my white soldiers be any different?  Maybe it'd be better if I were a skilled graduate of Kinki University.

Anyway, I got my transcript from Kansai today (finally!) and I found out I got all honor roll grades, with a 3.36 GPA, which hurts.  If I wouldn't have taken them as pass/fail classes I might've knocked my cumulative GPA up to a 3.1 or 3.2.  Dammit.  I'm just happy I got an A in that class I never went to.  You know the one.

But to balance out the disappointments, my Okaasan called me today, which is completely awesome.  I feel like such a jerk for not writing them letters and calling all the time.  I think they want me to come visit sometime soon, but what can I do?  I told them I'm definitely going next year, either in the summer or in the fall.  There she is to the left, with my host sister Atsuko.  Sometimes I wish I'd stayed much longer. *Sigh.*

And I watched 'The Saint' with Grandma, which is one of my favorite movies ever because that's what I want to do when I grow up.

4.2.05/20:32  daikon warrior #6

4.2.05/20:31  tweaking out, man

If you hadn't noticed, I took down the comic from yesterday and switched it with the new one from today.  I'm just really not pleased with the way the Dagonlord's font looks in the balloons, probably I need to work on the spacing between lines.  Also, I think today's comic is not only more appealing visually, but maybe even a little funnier.

I feel so dumb.  There's this line in a Modest Mouse song where he says, "Have one have twenty more one mores," and my initial reaction was to think he was talking about beers or something, but it's so obviously a reference to a pack of cigarettes.

But to balance that out I feel wonderfully productive as well.  I turned in my paper for Cognitive Psych and now I only have my Comedy Paper, a Japan and the USA 10-page research paper (and a presentation on Wednesday), an 8-page paper for Japanese Folklore, a Psych Final, and Japanese Speaking Final, and then I'm done.  Oh, and I have to read about 400 pages between all that.  Crickets.

4.1.05/17:37  another april fool's day

Like every year, the internet is all full of hoaxes today.  Fake trailer reviews, fake e-bay auctions, fake celebrity deaths.  Just like every year. I really liked the Pitt News today, with a hilarious article called 'Marcos to Dance-Dance the Revolution, Con Los Zapatos.'  Here's a quote:

"The revolution, apparently, will not be televised.  It will be dance-danced, at least according to Zapatista spokesperson Subcommandante Insurgente Marcos, who spoke as part of Carnegie Mellon University's Crazy Wackjob Anarchist lecture series."

That's much funnier than the real news.  They should stick to fake news and people might read it more.  At least I would.  Real news is just depressing as hell, until you realize that most of that is made-up too.

Sorry I overreacted, Del.  I can't fault you for your decisions, no matter how ridiculous I think they are.

In site news, I finished the Daikon Warrior FAQ.  You can get there by clicking on the link below.  The comic directly above this post is the first version of the storyboard, but I liked the other version so much that I made that into a comic too.  Both are available on the comics page

[daikon warrior FAQ] answers to questions

If you're wondering where all the March posts went, relax, they've been archived in the archives, just as they are at the beginning of every month that I'm not too lazy to do it.

Like the pictures?  Aren't they festive?  They're from the EALL Spring Fling which just happened to be last week.  Sorry you couldn't go this year, Nick.  But you did get to go last year and I didn't so I guess it all balances out.  Actually, it still would've been better if the Konan boys would've been there. Either way, it was still good to get a chance to talk to my favorite Yamamoto Sensei.  Look how genki that kid looks.
