8.30.03/07:42 fraggle rock Today, for the first time in six months, I actually got to drive through the Fort Pitt Tunnel (Outbound) on my way home from Pittsburgh!!! You may not understand what is so thrilling about this, but I assure you it was spectacular. I may have climaxed...
I think the TV show 'Fraggle Rock' is a metaphor for my life, or maybe not so much the show as the pursuit thereof. You see, growing up, Fraggle Rock was my favourite show. It was only on HBO, though, so I probably only saw like two episodes. It was my favourite *because* it was so unattainable.
*Sigh* I miss the doozers.
I have given up all hope for my patients. This is something I saw on some paperwork this morning:
Education: collage
This is the point where I smack my forehead and die as a vein bursts in my neck.
8.29.03/20:03 quick update The last few days have been insanely busy, so I haven't gotten the chance to do a proper post. Sorry.
So I like most of my classes. My astronomy teacher has this strange British accent tinged with Indian, since he lived in India. I'm upset by the amount of math that class is going to require.
Japanese Society will be good, but will require lots of reading. At least it seems interesting.
Yesterday, after my night class, I was ambushed by Tsurui Sensei and Yamamoto Sensei and had to top off my long day with a Nihongo shakedown. Good times. It was funny listening to them talk about these goofy kids playing capture the flag.
And I don't know what else to say...tomorrow is Megan's party, Sunday I'm supposed to do something with Jen (but we will see if that actually happens...) and Monday is yet another trip to Columbiana.
8.26.03/14:40 the flipside of the coin At 3am I got tired of staring at the ceiling in the dark. I went to Super K and bought a ten-gallon jug of Tylenol PM's. True, I only got like four hours of sleep, but it was glorious.
Today has been a freaking stellar day. I got my Japanese scheduling issues resolved, and learned how to play most of 'Ride on Shooting Star' but that is not all...
I got a story published on BBspot!!!
Click on the yellow link above to go and read it. Also, yesterday I wrote a poem about Shelbyville for class. It is in the non-rhyming poems section.
And I met a cute girl on the bus. She's a freshman and lives like 5 minutes away. Hope I get to see her again at some point in the not-too-distant future.
Now is time for some relaxing-simasu and some benkyoo-simasu. (Literally, 'doing relaxing' and 'doing studying')
8.24.03/23:03 twisting the knife yet again I hate being depressed. It's not in my nature to be down, especially over things I can't control.
So this is how it will be: Tonight I will be sad, and tomorrow I will wake up as a completely different person.
Completely.
I thought it would be better when I moved out of Shelbyville, but it's not that much better. An old set of hassles has been traded for a completely new set. Folksy incompetence has been exchanged for endless red tape and a new set of expenses.
I'm sick of women, sick of my screwed-up friends...sick of irritating family members who don't say a damn thing to me for twelve years and now want to be my best friend.
I am crazy...the religious hippie is the sane one.
8.24.03/09:03 capo 3 is the way to be I have been marvelously productive this morning. I finished and tracked a new song, and I wrote a new short story.
The song is called 'neptune afternoon'. I encourage you to download it right now. The guitar was kind of hard so I fouled it up just a little...but I think it turned out okay.
The story is called 'the watch'. It is about a watch. I have a watch. It's pretty shiny. In Japan, a watch is called a tokee (pronounced toe-kay).
As for the rest of the day, I think I'm going to take a nap. Aunt Teetee is making meatloaf today, and it will truly be a feast. She is a super awesome cook. After that...who knows.
If you are are a young, beautiful female and are free sometime around 6.5 tonight, I implore you to give me a call.
8.23.03/07:42 i heart tsururi sensei!!! Behold the absolute marvel and wonder that is my Lego train. Grandma salvaged it from a closet somewhere and now it lives again, transporting tiny plastic people from one side of the oval-shaped track to the other.
Go ahead. Behold.
The last picture isn't of my Lego train. It is a picture of the King's Dessert Wheel. My success rate of winning free pie is 50 percent, but the time that I won was actually due to the extreme kindness of our waitress and not my skill. Sooo close...
So yesterday was a good day. A little strange, but wonderful nonetheless. Dinner with Yamamoto Sensei was spectacularly marvelously great. I say that without hyperbole. She brought Tsururi Sensei! Cica-San and I spoke fluent Nihongo the whole time, and the food was incredibly good.
I had sushi rolls and some kind of kale salad and some frozen green tea and some kind of chicken-type thing and fish eggs wrapped in sea weed and some other stuff that looked like an animal's tongue. It was all really delicious. The place we went to is called Chaya and it is in Squirrel Hill.
When I got back to Oakland I was sitting on a ledge and this hippie guy with a beard stopped and talked to me about the bible. He said the world is going to end soon, and the choices I make now will determine whether I am worthy of entering heaven. He said all his possessions were in his backpack. He was riding all around Oakland on his bike. He talked to me for a little more than an HOUR. And I wonder, which one of us is the crazy one, him or me?
So some of you out there are thinking: "With this cumbersome school thing approaching, when will I ever get to talk to Jordan?"
I appreciate your concerns and direct you to check my schedule.
8.22.03/04:41 distant spiral galaxies I finished reading 'A Wild Sheep Chase'.
That's FIVE of Murakami's books in like two weeks. A few of you likely read that much by default, but it's a lot for me.
Tonight I got to play some songs, but there were only like a dozen people at Moonflight. No matter, it was still fun.
And I gave Jean a CD with a bunch of random Mike Doughty songs I downloaded way back when my computer was fast and I had the capabilities to do so. As I write this, she is getting ready to leave for IN.
Everybody leaves eventually.
Yesterday I got a postcard from Uncle Ray. It was postmarked from the cruise ship he was on. My postcard collection is depressingly complete, along with the shot glasses.
I'm not awake because I'm suffering from insomniaic tendancies this time, I am purposely staying awake so I can sleep 'til four o'clock. I have to meet Cica-San and Yamamoto-Sensei so we can go eat dinner in Squirrel Hill.
8.21.03/00:55 infinitely cooler than me? i doubt it. Tonight I saw some bands. Midtown was great, Reggie and the Full Effect was okay, and the other ones kind of sucked. My ears are ringing profusely.
I have been speaking Japanese ALL DAY. We had to study for the interviewing of Japanese people, then discuss it. It was fun, though.
Tomorrow I have to take Jean's book back to the library before she kills me. Aside from that, I don't want to do anything. It is my last day of freedom...ever, maybe.
Also: *School starts Monday. *Fort Pitt Tunnel Inbound is OPEN!!! *Fufuberry Soda is good.
8.19.03/19:34 kid things Apparently Steph's boy George isn't excited about the prospect of his girlfriend bearing my offspring. I guess that's to be expected, but hey, if it bugs him that much he can spring for an abortion. *shudders*
So yesterday was good. I introduced Megan to my grandma and it went well. Yokatta desu nee...
And I got to play Megan the nepenthe song which is, of course, all about her. She tortured me by making me watch a positively awful movie on the Lifetime channel. Between that and baseball I do believe I have paid for the sins of this life AND a few past ones.
This morning I woke up at 6am. I had only been asleep for like 4 hours. At first I was excited because I thought I could go back to sleep, but no. No sleep. No sleep ever.
I used the time to finish reading 'Dance Dance Dance,' and now I've moved on to 'A Wild Sheep Chase.' Both of which are Murakami books, and they seem to be related somehow in plot. Interesting.
Tomorrow is the last day of Japanese tutoring, and we are taking Yamamoto Sensei out to eat Friday. Tomorrow night is a 'show' in Oakland. Power chords make me so excited...
8.18.03/17:33 hypothetically speaking:
me:
would we put our child up for adoption?
8.18.03/02:41 duckman was soo cool... Too bad they cancelled it. But apparently it's on Comedy Central at 2:30 in the morning on Mondays. How bout that.
My creativity well has run dry lately. The latest lyrics are dry and lacking in profoundness, recent jokes strike a decidedly unfunny chord. I feel bland and listless.
I think I need to do something exciting, or at least get some sleep.
8.16.03/08:29 back to bed i go At work, they finally filled the vending machines again. I was overjoyed to find Lunchables. Ahh, bliss.
AND I wrote a new short story. You can find it in the short stories section.
If you are a new visitor to the site and don't know this, you can send comments, corrections, and angry musings to jbaugher@peachycomics.com. Unless you know my personal e-mail address...if that's the case, you can keep sending things there.
One last thing: although Grasshoppers are really good, they are not quite as good as Milky Ways. I guess I will have to keep searching.
8.15.03/20:32 sandcastles and dancing Things I learned last night:
1. Jean can dance. 2. I...can't.
Yesterday I woke up at the crack of noon to get ready and spend the day with Jean. Her mom made excellent blueberry pancakes.
After that we went swimming at Raccoon Park and built sandcastles with intricate moats. We left our castles in the care of a sinister little boy named Nathan who likely reigned firey death upon them the second we left.
Jean decided to wear her prom dress to Open Mic Night at Moonflight, leaving me no choice but to dress up a little. There were many people on the sign up sheet, but we both got to play and sing. Jean was awesome, I was okay. I even got to recite my trademark haiku.
When Moonflight 'closed', everybody did karaoke and I took pictures of it. Then Heather and John and Jean and I went to Pittsburgh to dance at Pegasus. I've never been to a gay nightclub before, but it was still much fun. We stayed until 2, when they closed. We were all very much exhausted and thirsty at this point and John was nice enough to get everybody water.
When we got back from Pittsburgh we took Heather home and people took showers. Then the three of us went to Eat'n'Park where I had fries that were both the best fries ever in the history of the universe because I was so hungry, and also the most awful things ever in the history of the universe, because they were so greasy.
Then I came home and took a short nap before going to Oakland to take care of school business.
Like I said above, there is a new gallery with pictures from yesterday.
8.14.03/00:50 janine, i drink you up Tonight I went out with Megan. We raided K-mart and Super Discount City and had jedi swordfights. And we went to King's.
There was this super cute waitress named Janine, just like the song, and I left my number on the back of my placemat. Doubt she will ever call, but either way it was fun.
Grr...Megan tortured me and made me watch baseball.
Tomorrow may be the day I finally get to meet Jen's parents. I'm pretty excited 'bout that. I hope her dad doesn't kill me because I am too old for his daughter. Perhaps I will even shave, so as to make a better impression.
Yeah right.
Chelsea wrote me a poem. She is going to make me cry I think. I will become one of those despondent emo people. Mwhahahaha. Again...
Yeah right.
8.14.03/00:45 chubbs' poem
my brother you're an
ass
8.13.03/03:59 time for cookies Today was the last of the six episodes of Furi-Kuri. Good stuff. AND they brought Bebop back. I almost don't know what to say.
So I have been fighting writers' block to make some progress on the book-writing front. It is taking longer than I'd hoped...I mean, I should be a famous international author by now.
Mwahahahahaha!!!
I finished Hard Boiled Wonderland. It was pretty good, I'd definitely recommend it.
8.10.03/15:47 play'd out sounds like reel big fish For the past couple of days I have joyfully neglected my posting duties to take a bit of a break. Friday I went with Sarah to AMC to see Terminus Est, who would have been really good if the venue's sound system wasn't all jacked up.
After that we went to see 'Bad Boys 2', which I think was really funny and good, despite the lack of a coherent plot and the blatant predictability.
Yesterday was the Hobo, and it was better than last year. I didn't get get sauced and make an ass of myself like Kim did, but I still had fun. Also there was a zombie movie. Spooky.
-also-
I finally got nepenthe tracked and lyricked. If you download it right now, it will be free. Actually, it will be free no matter when you download it. If I like you, that is.
8.8.03/02:45 ride on shooting star Furi-Kuri (unsure of spelling) is the greatest thing ever, I think. So the artwork section is complete and functional. If you are so inclined, you should check it out.
Only two more days until the Hobo. This is a family gathering where they cook vegetables in big metal trash cans and eat and drink like hobos. Every year is a promise of constant drama, and this year looks to be no exception.
Today marked the official end of my clean-living binge. I've come to a conclusion: I'm not going to live forever, so I might as well live today.
Books of the day: 'Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' by Haruki Murakami and 'My Inventions' by Nikola Tesla.
Eventually I am going to make a fan page for Nikola Tesla, since he is the most underrated figure in the course of history. Who is he, you ask? He invented that alternating current thing all your appliances are plugged into, the light bulb above your head, made components which are in your TV and computer screen, and your cell phone works because of his ideas.
But OF COURSE you know who Thomas Edison was. As for his lightbulb, it was only around for about a decade and a half.
8.7.03/15:28 maybe i'll come down Today I embark for Ohio to hang out with Uncle Matt. It wasn't the random road trip to Geneva-on-the-lake I was thinking of taking today, but it should suffice as an interesting way to spend the evening.
I don't know if I will be back tonight or tomorrow. I'd like to add some more stuff to the site, but I doubt I get a chance to do this anytime soon.
As the great Mr. Doughty once said, "Don't fall through the stars." I don't know what this means, but it's definitely something to ponder.
8.6.03/20:04 hobo ni ikitai n desu ka? Below is the picture I have been using to cheat online personals sites. Is it the same as stealing? I don't know. What I do know is that I'm not paying someone so I can be rejected by a strange internet girl...I can experience that in real life for free.
Lately productive days have been alternating with completely wasted ones. Today was productive. Again, millions of innocent grass blades were slaughtered for aesthetic reasons. The war continues, and I hear the grass is calling for rain-based reinforcements tomorrow so that it can mock me with more growing.
I saw Tsuri Sensei today in Oakland and I think she said she is going to be one of my teachers this semester, but it is difficult to tell what she was really saying. If so, I am excited, she is one of my favourites.
This morning, Jean made me a milky way, and I watched her survey random people on whether or not they liked whipped cream. She did this because of a comment I made to her yesterday about how people who don't like whipped cream are useless and irrelevant dregs sapping society of all that is good and pure.
Do YOU like whipped cream?
8.6.03/05:25 uncaffeinated and buzzing I am sweaty. Every few seconds I yawn. It is 5:30, I have to be awake in three and a half hours, but I know sleep will not claim me.
I haven't had any caffeine, I tried exercising to make myself tired, and reading, nothing works. 200 pages later, and with sore muscles, here I am.
It has been like this every night this week. Am I in love? I doubt it. During those manic times one normally would become obsessive I see nothing. My mind just runs. My body is tired, but my mind just laughs and keeps going. Though she definitely captures my interest, she is not the root of my unrest.
My cool, damp basement has become a furnace. The temperature is the same, but I am different. I can sense a shift in microcosms.
If you couldn't tell by the underlined link, there is a new story in the short stories section. I think it will explain my situation a little better than this post can.
As for the site, I took pictures for the artwork section, but the tedious task of editing them and making a page for them is not exactly one I am enthusiastic about.
8.5.03/00:56 disrespectful to the booze Twice today I was awakened by phone calls from cute girls. That's not a complaint, though.
I was amazingly productive today. I wrote a new song, went to the library with Jean, got a haircut, finally got some salient facts about Jen, and cleaned my refrigerator.
That's not all. I finished 'Norwegian Wood' and grandma took me to get two new books.
If you look above, you will see a not-yet-functional link for artwork. I want to take pictures of sketches of mine and make a section out of it. I'm also going to make some proper buttons for the links above.
If I get a chance, I will add the new song and lyrics tomorrow.
Perhaps I will finally be able to sleep for more than 5 hours.
Perhaps.
8.4.03/00:16 special haircut? I went with Jesse to see 'American Wedding'. I give it a C: Funny, predictable, standard.
During the movie, *she* texted me. How exciting...maybe tomorrow I will get to actually talk to her.
Tomorrow there is no tutoring! Yet I still have to go to Oakland. That place is inescapable.
8.3.03/08:02 finally finished all the malibu missions No work until 8/15!!! I am much pleased.
Yesterday, at the mall, Chelsea made me go get the cute chocolate shop girl's phone number. I am glad she did. Perhaps something good will come of that.
Perhaps.
In other news, there is a new weekend sleeping policy, summarized nicely by these two pictures:
the policy the boot
I think I'm going to start reading the book I got at Barnes and Noble the other day. If I'm lucky, that is ALL I will do all day.
8.2.03/14:47 four letter pit of despair...the mall Today I am taking my sister to the mall. This is the first time she has come to visit since Christmas. How weak is that?
After that, it's more work, maybe a reunion, then some sleep, and after that I may add some more stuff. Maybe.
Still undecided on whether to make one last trip out to the 'ville this week.
8.1.03/18:57 rabbit rabbit redux Two posts in one day? Pure madness, I know.
Today I tracked two more songs, and you can download them on the song downloads page.
Lyrics are available, too.
Tomorrow I get my car back...I am beyond reticent about that.
8.1.03/00:01 rabbit rabbit day Again, I have redone the logo.
If you are seeking past posts, go to the archives section and you shall find them.
I am still working on the character design for Carter-San. It is very hard to draw a Japanese person in a funny way without being stereotypical or racially offensive.
Because people still keep asking, despite thousands of times explaining it, I will detail the idea behind Rabbit Rabbit Day one last time for the uninitiated:
1st of the month = wake up. Upon waking up, say 'rabbit rabbit' first thing = good luck.
I first saw 'Rabbit Rabbit Day' on one of those stupid 'Nick Days' they used to have on Nickelodeon, other examples being 'Plant a Tree Day', 'Only Use Words Containing the Letter R Day', 'Take a Dump on Your Neighbor's Lawn Day' and so on...
But I did it. I said 'Rabbit Rabbit' when I woke up and had good luck.
Now it is a custom.
Let's have a moment of silence for Futurama, which for some reason wasn't on last night. Let's hope this is just a programming error and not a permanent occurrence.
